Vélvík EHF is a subcontractor to some of Iceland’s largest manufacturing companies. Founded in 1988, Vélvík specializes in precision mechanics, offering custom construction and engineering services, as well as general turning and mechanical engineering with both computer-controlled and conventional construction machines.

EXPANDING CAPACITY WITH NINTH MAZAK MACHINE
The ninth Mazak machine has arrived at Vélvík EHF in Iceland. Mazak has just completed the installation of an INTEGREX i-350H S x 2500 U at Vélvík. Vélvík will machine large parts up to Ø340mm x 1000mm in aluminum on their new INTEGREX. The investment in the Mazak INTEGREX i-350H x 2500 U was chosen because the workpiece needs to be turned, drilled, and milled both externally and internally. With the Mazak INTEGREX i-350H S, the workpiece can be machined in a single “Done-in-One” operation.
“In the past, the product required multiple machines with multiple setups, with the new INTEGREX i-350HS we have the possibility to do all the machining Done-in-one”
Daniel Gudmundsson (Director / Vélvik EHF)

FROM MULTI – STEP PROCESSES TO ONE MACHINE
The concept of optimizing process flow has become possible with the new INTEGREX, due to specialized solutions implemented on the machine. This has helped Velvik achieve more precise and flexible machining of their parts. In the past, processes required multiple operations across various machine types, such as turret turning machines, pre-cutting on 5-axis milling machines, and several final cuts on multitasking machines before the parts were completed.
With this new concept, all operations can be handled on one machine, the INTEGREX i-350HS. Initial roughing and final finishing are still necessary, but the machine and its equipment allow for simultaneous part transfer from spindle to spindle. The steady rest is specially designed to handle a swing from Ø430 down to Ø75. The INTEGREX additionally features powerful chucks with a quick-change jaw system. The integrated Superflow coolant system operates at pressures up to 70 bar in multiple pressure steps, providing flush coolant through both turning spindles.
Additional features include:
- Equipped with a 74-tool magazine, including Mazak Tool ID functionality, which registers and saves all tool details in local storage for easy setup changes.
- 5-axis options on both spindles, offering flexibility in performing numerous precuts and final cuts depending on material behaviour during machining, as well as deburring operations.
“The development of the products that one of our customers is producing required us to invest in a bigger machine, that would allow us to increase workflow through our shop, and with the success of our previous INTEGREX’s, the choice was clear“
Daniel Gudmundsson (Director / Vélvik EHF)
ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AND STRONG COLLABORATION
The implementation of the Mazatrol SmoothAi control at Vélvík marks a significant advancement in surface finishing, enabling greater precision and efficiency. By utilizing CAM outputs through Mazak SMC surface settings and leveraging the fast processor in the control unit, the system seamlessly handles high-speed modes from both CAM and Mazatrol. Additionally, the intuitive touch screen functionality has streamlined operations, making programming and machining faster and smoother for operators.
This success has been driven by strong collaboration between Vélvík and Mazak Denmark. From the start, several members of Mazak Denmark have worked closely with Vélvík’s management, machine programmers, and operators to ensure a smooth installation and integration process. Thomas Rieper from Mazak played a key role, traveling between Denmark and Iceland to provide continuous support and guidance. This partnership exemplifies the power of teamwork in achieving cutting-edge manufacturing efficiency.
