Rudder manufacturer Jefa Marine, part of the BSI group, has invested in a Mazak QUICK TURN 450MY lathe to boost the CNC-machined part of its production.
Jefa Marine, based in Greve, Denmark, specialises in the manufacture of rudders and mechanical steering systems, which it has been producing primarily for the yacht segment since 1980. Since first getting started, the company has produced more than 20,000 rudder and 150,000 rudder bearing products.
In 2017, the company was acquired by the group BSI A/S, based in Haderslev, which in 2019 also took over Hundested Propeller A/S, so that today it owns a number of machine manufacture companies specialising in the marine segment.
For more than three decades the group has demonstrated a constant drive for growth through continuous expansion of the product portfolio and the acquisition of acclaimed manufacturers of maritime equipment.
This also includes, for example, the companies BSI-Rigging and GORI Propeller, which, according to the group, have helped underpin its desire to offer worldwide customer support.
Jefa Marine currently has a handful of CNC machines installed at its production facility in Greve, primarily from Mazak.
Mazak’s Technical Sales Consultant, Brian Gøttsche Nielsen, most recently served as the contact person in connection with the investment in a larger QUICK TURN 450MY CNC lathe.
A machine the experienced Mazak employee describes as a bit of a machining powerhouse when it comes to lathing. Its features include a 165 millimetre-diameter spindle bore, turning length of 2,000 millimetres, spindle power of AC 45 kilowatts (60 horsepower) and a torque of 1,847 Newton metres.
Other machinery investments in the group include the installation this year at BSI’s Haderslev headquarters of what is described as the world’s largest press for the manufacture of rigging system components, weighing in at 35 tonnes.
